Christine Jennings Congratulates Newest Democratic U.S. Representative Don Cazayoux

SARASOTA, FL – May 9, 2008 – Christine Jennings, Democratic candidate for Florida’s 13th Congressional District, issued the following statement congratulating Democrat Don Cazayoux, who was sworn into Congress on May 6 to represent Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District:

“I want to extend my congratulations to my fellow Democrat Don Cazayoux following his remarkable victory this past weekend in Louisiana’s special election,” said Jennings. “Despite being targeted by the national GOP and conservative interest groups, Don’s victory indicated that Democrats can turn even the most red of districts blue. In a district that voted 59 percent for Bush in 2004 and has been represented by a Republican in Congress since 1974, the voters have spoken out in favor of real change.”

“Coupled with Democrat Bill Foster’s win two months ago for the Illinois seat of former Republican Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, this victory proves that Democrats can win in districts that have long been written off as Republican strongholds,” added Jennings spokeswoman Melissa Smith. “This trend will no doubt play a significant role in the November elections, and we look forward to joining Representatives Foster and Cazayoux in increasing the Democratic majority in Congress.”
