Vern Buchanan Opposes Energy Independence Bill

Sides with Big Oil Companies, against District's Priorities

SARASOTA, FL - Showing his willingness to vote in line with special interests and against the priorities of his district, today Vern Buchanan opposed the bipartisan Energy Independence and Security Act, legislation that will put our nation on the path to energy independence.  This bipartisan solution will lower energy prices, increase vehicle fuel efficiency and help to end America's dependence on foreign oil.

"Floridians are straining to keep up with skyrocketing gas prices, rising health care rates and escalating housing costs.  But today, Vern Buchanan opposed lowering gas prices and setting our country on a path to energy independence, choosing instead to side with special interests like Big Oil," said Christine Jennings, Democratic Congressional Candidate.  "I believe that a smart energy policy starts with conservation.  Today, Congress took an important first step toward energy independence, making our country and our economic future more secure."

The Energy Independence and Security Act increases vehicles' fuel efficiency for the first time in 32 years and repeals tax breaks for oil companies so that we can invest those savings in clean renewable energy and new American technologies.  This legislation authorizes $50 million a year to establish marine renewable centers that would study the potential of environmentally friendly marine renewable energy, helping to create new jobs here in Florida.
